Ruth Bowen

Background: Native Texan, lived in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and in Denton for 45 years. Lifelong Methodist / United Methodist, United Women in Faith / UMW member for 54 years. During my 40 years in the FUMC-Denton UWF/UMW, I have held positions of Social Action Coordinator, President, Vice-President, Program Resources, and circle leader. Currently I am in my fourth year as Social Action Coordinator for the North Texas Conference UWF. Social justice issues have always been a focus of mine, especially those impacting Native American Communities.

I am a Certified Lay Servant and teacher, active in Lay Servant Ministries for 11 years.

Education: BSN 1974, MS 1981, RN, Ret. I was active in professional nursing for 42 years. My nursing practice focus was working with children and their families. School Health Nursing was the practice area I enjoyed the most. I was the Coordinator of Health Services and campus nurse in Lake Dallas ISD for 22 years. I taught in the TWU College of Nursing for six years, worked in Pedi ICU, nursery, NICU and was the nurse consultant for an Early Childhood Intervention program. I Continue to be a strong advocate for patient education, encouraging family and friends to advocate for themselves, learn as much as they can about medications and health issues. I am lifelong learner.

Personal: Married to Walter for 47 years. We enjoy retirement, travel when we can as a couple or as a family. Our son is 41, our daughter is 35. We love the National Parks. I enjoy reading (advocate for the UWF Reading Program), taking walks, being with friends.
